So one night looking into the freezer, I found myself vegging out as my eyes scanned the frozen landscape . What to make…what to make I pondered. Freezer burnt hamburger patties. Nope, I don’t event know what circa they are from. A 3 foot frozen package of 25 chicken beasts from Costco? No, defrost will take two days and I forgot to pick up a 5 gallon bucket of BBQ sauce from Costco. My eyes met a lonely bag of mixed veggies and the brainstorming began. What can I make with a bag of vegetable medley? FRIED RICE!
With some leftover white rice and other basic ingredients I set forth to try to make some curry shrimped fried rice from scratch! Yum yum. Being a part-time stay at home Dad and a full-time wedding photographer it is always great to be able to quickly whip up a healthy dinner for the fam. I must say this dish has become my go to dish when it is “one of those days.” Hope you enjoy!

Prep time is about 15 mins.
- Cook 3 cups of rice. After completed place in fridge to cool the rice to be used later.
- Add 3/4 cup of vegetable oil and turn the stove on medium- high (about 6 or 7)
- Add 1/3 cup of dry minced onions. Cook until onions are golden brown.
- Add 25 chopped uncooked raw shrimp or 2 cubed uncooked chicken breasts.Cook until shrimp is red or until chicken is white.
- Add 1 tablespoon of ground black pepper.
- Add 1 tablespoon of curry powder. (I use yellow, but any will do)
- Add 1 cup of frozen vegetables. (A medley with corn, carrots and pees work best)
- Add the 3 cups of cooked cold rice. Mix thoroughly.
- Add 2 raw eggs and mix until rice looks less wet.
- Add 2 – 3 tablespoons of Soy Sauce to taste.

Most of the wedding day I use my ‘Ninja Skills” and document the wedding from a distance in a more photojournalist approach. I absolutely love using the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM Lens to snag shots with out being seen by my subjects! Who said wedding photojournalists only use wide angle lenses? Here are a few shots from past weddings were I caught “Real Life” moments.

I believe that no matter what trends the wedding photography industry experiences, wedding photojournalism will never expire. Trends will come and go. Think about how over the years how much clothing has changed. In the last 40 years we’ve seen tied die shirts, neon, stone washed jeans and Doc Martins. The clothes that people wear simply serve as a temporary style. Remove the clothes and what are you left with? Real people…real life.
I’m sure you have seen some old school wedding photography and noticed the “awesome” heart shaped framing…or my personal favorite where the bride is pretending to sniff her spot colored bouquet at eye level while standing in front of the window! Barf. ;) Wedding photojournalists capture REAL LIFE with its raw and candid moments. We act as an observer of the wedding day and document it as it unfolds. Minimal interaction allows the wedding day’s emotions and interactions to flow naturally. It’s this flow that help me photograph real life.

Delaware wedding photojournalist

So after almost a whole year of Photog Shootout events nationwide we came back to where is all began. I knew I wanted to make this event an O-mazing one!!! So for this photography workshop I made the theme “Punk Rock Bridals!” ;) Philadelphia is one of my favorite cities of all times. I mean with a nickname of “Illadelphia”…you know it rocks! So with the theme in place the planning began. When planning these photography workshops in other cities I often have to reach out to my local photography peeps in that town. My good friend Darah (AKA D-Nice) of Dollface Studio allowed us to use her new studio for hair, make-up and wardrobe. Also a HUGE thanks goes out to my boy Michael Allebach of Allebach Photography and Tattoedbrides.com! Once I announce the theme he was quick to jump onboard and help me plan this puppy. I was happy to have him as he IS the a PUNK…….Rock photographer! lol
So everything came together. When I woke up it was 20 degrees out! I had to bust out the long johns and the Navy peacoat. All in all the event was awesome. We had some great feedback from the photographers who came out and I cant wait until the next one! Which happens to be the NYC Photog Shootout in January!
